I have been using hair conditioner since I can remember and for me it always has been a ‘must’ but I still thought it is about time we talk why do we need to use hair conditioner?
Hair in a good condition is hydrophobic, which means hair is rich in fatty acids and hair is more soft. However, our hair is constantly exposed to environment, heat, UV, friction ,brushing and it can become more hydrophilic, which means it loses moisture and becomes more dry.
For fact, no one wants to have hydrophilic hair and if we want to avoid that conditioners can really help! I won’t go into massive chemistry details here how conditioner actually works but the main functions are restoring natural lipid layer (bringing hair back to hydrophobic phase), sealing the cuticle (reducing split ends), minimising frizz and friction and of course adding shine, smoothness and manageability. Sounds pretty good?!
How to know which conditioner is the best? Good conditioners are rich in hydrolysed proteins and amino acids, different oils and extracts (Brazilian nuts, Argan oil, Honey) and silicones (I will talk more about them maybe next time). All of these ingredients are different from each other due to their molecular weight, if they don’t weight much they will penetrate inside the hair, whilst higher weight ingredients will form protection coat on our hair (good if you style your hair a lot, extra protection).
How to know which conditioner suits your hair? Very much depends on your hair but my advice try to rotate conditioners or find the one that has a lot goodness in it. Personally , I am lusting over Nexxus hair conditioner it contains variety of good proteins , extracts and silicones for extra shine. Don’t be scared of silicones, media is full of wrong myths and actually some of them are really good if hair has been dyed because it protects hair colour from fading.
Hope that gives you a better idea what hair conditioners actually do and let me know what is your favourite one!
Have a wonderful day xx
