I have been doing PhD in hair biology for the last three years but I have been growing long hair since I can remember. All my life I had pretty long and straight hair. I never had to own hair straightener and even on very rainy or humid days my hair remain super straight.
I talk a lot about science and what I have learned as a PhD student regarding hair health, but now I want to share my top tips how to look after long and straight hair from my personal experience, even before I knew more about hydrolysed proteins and hair follicle.
Use hair oils – my mother told me to use a hair oil since I was 14 years old and I think that has been super huge help to my long and straight hair. Every time I wash my hair I use few drops of hair oil , at the moment I am using L’oreal Elvive Extraordinary oil . It is a great combination of different oils that coat hair cuticle and hold the moisture that our hair needs.
Allow your hair rest – I never sleep with my hair in a braid or a messy bun, whenever I go to bed I also let me hair down and allow my hair rest. Braiding and buns induces tension and friction in hair fibers and I prefer to style my hair during day time and my hair can properly rest at night
Wash hair every other day – I noticed unbelievable difference on my hair ends when I started washing my hair every other day. Water makes cuticle swell and not washing hair right induces friction and split end formation, thanks to beauty industry for dry shampoo because it certainly makes my cuticles more happy!
Look after your scalp – I always had some problems with my scalp, itch and some dandruffs, especially during winter months and tried my best to find ideal products for my scalp. I know for fact that looking after my scalp really helped me to grow my hair.
Control heat on your hair – As I said I never used straightener but time to time I like to use hair wand by Irresistible me. However, temperature is very important, I never go above 180 degrees and I apply a lot of heat protection. The same comes to hair dryer, always using medium heat to protect scalp and hair. I also never died my hair, which I think helped me to maintain healthy hair growth.
I do really like my hair but sometimes I wish I had curly or beach waves, because I am too lazy to style. However, my standard look is clean, shiny hair in a simple ponytail and I am ready to go. What is your hair type? Please let me know!
Have a wonderful day xx
